Kastamonu chestnut harvest begins with increased yields

The chestnut harvest has begun in the Kastamonu province of Turkey, specifically in the coastal districts of Abana, Bozkurt, Çatalzeytin, Cide, Doğanyurt, and İnebolu. This year, producers are seeing increased yields following successful interventions by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Kastamonu Regional Directorate of Forestry to control the gall wasp pest, which had previously reduced harvests.

In the Doğanyurt district, the chestnut trade generates an annual income of approximately 20 million TL. The local ‘lamb chestnuts’ are known for their thin shells and sweet aroma. Prices for the harvest currently range between 250 TL and 350 TL per kilogram, depending on the size of the nut. The produce is cleaned, sorted by size, and distributed to various cities across Turkey, including Istanbul, Samsun, Trabzon, and Giresun.
