Kastamonu University researchers develop mushroom-based sunscreen

Academics at Kastamonu University have developed a natural sunscreen using mushroom extracts found in the forests of Kastamonu. Following a three-year research period, the team successfully created a formulation with an SPF 25+ rating that utilizes the antioxidant and bioactive properties of species such as Reishi, Kanlıca (Lactarius Deliciosus), and Ayı mushrooms.

Developed by Professor Temel Kan Bakır and Assistant Professor Mertcan Karadeniz, the product avoids synthetic UV filters, making it a potential alternative for consumers seeking natural or sensitive-skin-friendly cosmetics. The project was completed independently without external project funding, and the resulting formulation has been officially registered by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office.

Researchers are currently working to increase the protection level of the formula to SPF 50+.
