Kastamonu veterinarian uses external fixation to treat cat after eight-story fall

A cat named Mars, located in the Bozkurt district of Kastamonu, has made a rapid recovery after falling from the eighth floor of an apartment building. The cat suffered eight separate fractures across its two hind legs.

Veterinarian Muhammed Coduroğlu treated the animal using “external fixation,” a method applied for the first time in the region. This surgical technique uses titanium plates, carbon metal rods, and pins to stabilize bone fractures from outside the skin, minimizing damage to biological tissue. Coduroğlu noted that traditional plate-and-screw methods were not viable due to the highly fragmented nature of the bones.

While a 45-day recovery period was initially expected, Mars was able to walk and attend to its own needs just four days after the operation. Follow-up examinations on the 14th day showed no signs of infection or complications in the radiographic images.
