Kastelli Airport costs surge to 678 million euros

Independent MP Harris Mamoulakis has criticized the escalating costs and delays associated with the construction of the new Kastelli Airport in Crete. He claims the project has become a financial advantage for private investors at the expense of the Greek state.

According to Mamoulakis, the initial agreement involved a public contribution of 180 million euros, while private entities held a 54.1% majority. However, due to budget increases, delays, and contractual compensations totaling 444.3 million euros, the total public financial burden has surged to at least 678 million euros. Despite this nearly fourfold increase in state expenditure, private investors maintain their majority stake.

Furthermore, the project's completion date has been pushed from 2027 to late 2028, raising concerns regarding additional compensation claims and further financial implications for the public sector.
