Kastoria imposes emergency zones to curb sheep pox outbreak

The Veterinary Sub‑Department of the Kastoria regional unit announced emergency measures to contain a sheep pox (ευλογιά) outbreak detected in the village of Gérma, Argos Oresitikos. Based on a laboratory report from the Molecular Diagnostics, Virology and Exotic Diseases Laboratory of the Veterinary Center of Athens, authorities confirmed infection in local flocks.

Three zones were established: a 5 km protection zone around the infected farm, a 20 km surveillance zone covering dozens of nearby communities, and a further restricted area. Within these zones the movement of live animals, trade of sheep and goats, and grazing are prohibited. Slaughter is allowed only at the nearest approved slaughterhouse with veterinary permission, and the transport of fresh milk and animal by‑products is permitted under strict controls. Farmers are urged to follow the bio‑security measures to prevent further spread.
