Kastoria veterinary authorities enforce sheep scab movement bans

The Veterinary Sub-directorate of Kastoria has issued clarifications to livestock farmers regarding bans on animal movement from units located within prohibited zones. These measures follow the detection of sheep scab cases in the region.

The current protocols are determined by a series of Executive Decisions from the European Commission, which supersede previous ministerial decisions from 2023. These decisions dictate the size of prohibited zones, the duration of restrictive measures, and the specific actions required to limit and eradicate the disease.

Authorities emphasized that no exceptions to the movement bans can be granted, as measures are based on the overall epidemiological situation of the country rather than just local data. The goal is to limit the spread of the disease and stabilize the epidemiological situation to allow for the recovery of the sheep and goat farming sector. Farmers are urged to strictly adhere to biosecurity measures and avoid illegal actions that could jeopardize containment efforts.
