Kataka celebrates Durga Puja with unique culinary traditions
In Kataka, the Silver City, Durga Puja celebrations are characterized by distinct culinary traditions that blend spiritual devotion with regional Odia flavors. At the Ranighat Puja Mandap, organizers serve traditional Dahi Pakhala—a dish of fermented rice and curd—to approximately 15,000 devotees free of charge. Similarly, the Chauliaganj area prepares large quantities of Dahi Pakhala Bhog and vegetable curry to feed around 10,000 people.
Local customs also include a grand fish feast during Maha Navami, a tradition in certain areas like Chandni Chowk that dates back to 1817. This practice, originally initiated by the Darpani Queen, features items such as fish curry, Kanika, and Pohala fish fry. These meals reflect the cultural belief of welcoming Maa Durga as a daughter returning to her parental home.
To manage the large crowds, local administration, police, and volunteers have implemented logistical measures, including separate seating arrangements for men and women to ensure orderly celebrations.
