Kataka, India police arrest suspect in minor boy assault after viral video

Police in the Chauliaganj area of Kataka city, Odisha, have arrested one suspect, identified as Prabin Sahu, in connection with the stripping and assault of a 17‑year‑old boy. The police are also seeking to locate four additional accused.

The incident, captured on a video that spread widely on social media, showed the minor being stripped, beaten with bamboo sticks and wooden planks, and forced to walk naked after being accused of stealing a battery. A second young man was also severely beaten. Authorities said the mob acted as a “kangaroo court” rather than involving the police.

Following the video’s circulation, Kataka police opened an investigation, registered a case, and promised strict legal action against all participants, including those who filmed and shared the footage. Officials urged citizens not to take the law into their own hands and to report crimes to police.
