Katalyst Spacecraft fails to rescue NASA's Swift Observatory
Katalyst Space Technologies’ Link spacecraft successfully approached NASA’s Swift Observatory to collect data, but failed to complete its primary mission of rescuing the aging telescope. The robotic salvager reached within 15 kilometers (9 miles) of the observatory, using its sensors to capture images and proximity data, but lacked the fuel required to boost Swift into a higher, more stable orbit.
The rescue attempt, which cost NASA $30 million, was compromised by technical issues with the Link spacecraft. Shortly after its July launch, the vehicle entered an uncontrollable spin. While flight controllers managed to stabilize the craft, the propellant required for that maneuver left insufficient fuel for the final rendezvous and orbital boost. Katalyst CEO Ghonhee Lee attributed these difficulties to a rushed nine-month development timeline that necessitated the use of available rather than preferred components.
Despite the failure, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman noted the value of such experimental missions for learning about satellite servicing. The Swift Observatory, which has been in operation since 2004, is expected to reenter Earth’s atmosphere later this year due to orbital decay accelerated by solar activity. Link will continue to operate in proximity to Swift to test its robotic arms before it eventually reenters the atmosphere.
