Kate O’Connor wins European heptathlon gold
Irish heptathlete Kate O’Connor has won the gold medal at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham. The 25-year-old secured her victory after a strong performance in the final 800m event, finishing third in that discipline to claim the overall title.
O’Connor, a Dundalk native, described the win as a ‘pinch me moment’ and expressed deep pride in representing Ireland. She dedicated her achievement to her late grandmother, Madeleine, who passed away during the athlete's training camp.
Following her victory, O’Connor stated that her success at the continental level has fueled her ambitions to compete for world and Olympic titles. She also received a hero’s welcome upon her return, highlighted by her role as an ambassador for Spar and Eurospar.
