Kaštela Bay sea turtle attacks swimmers in Croatia

A loggerhead sea turtle has repeatedly attacked swimmers in Kaštela Bay, near Split, Croatia. Since July 22, at least five separate biting incidents have been reported in the area.

The most recent attack occurred on Sunday, August 9, at Miljenko and Dobrila beach in Kaštel Lukšić, where a young man was bitten on his lower back. Witnesses and the victim's mother noted that the animal, estimated to weigh approximately 70 kilograms, approached swimmers from behind and attacked even when not provoked.

Experts suggest the turtle's unusual territorial behavior may be due to a male protecting a female during mating season. While the species is strictly protected and relocation is not considered a viable or legal solution, local authorities and the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Green Transition are monitoring the situation. Experts warn that although the turtle lacks teeth, its powerful jaws can cause bruising, lacerations, and serious tissue damage. Swimmers are advised to exercise extreme caution and avoid the affected areas while the animal remains in the vicinity.
