Katerini Bar Association announces strike over banking enforcement laws
The Katerini Bar Association has announced that its members will abstain from enforcement actions starting Monday, November 2, 2026. This decision is a protest against a new bill introduced by the Ministry of National Economy and Finance.
The proposed legislation would allow private documents to serve as enforceable titles without a judicial ruling, bypassing the standard payment order process. The Bar Association argues this violates the Code of Civil Procedure and strips debtors of essential judicial protections, as the resulting titles would be largely unchallengeable.
Lawyers claim the amendment favors banks, foreign funds, and debt management companies at the expense of citizens' rights. The association stated the move creates legal insecurity and undermines the rule of law, prompting the strike to defend equal access to justice.
