Katerini Municipality opposes water utility mergers

The Municipality of Katerini has issued a formal resolution opposing government plans for the mandatory merger of Municipal Water and Sewage Companies (DEYA). The council argues that water is a fundamental social and public good that must be managed locally to ensure equitable access, quality, and environmental protection. The municipality claims the current restructuring lacks scientific basis and sufficient consultation with local authorities, characterizing the move as a step toward the privatization of water resources.

Separately, the Municipality of Katerini has been recognized for its financial administration and transparency. According to a study by the University of Thessaly involving 332 municipalities, Katerini ranked first in Northern Greece and third nationally. The evaluation, based on 16 audit procedures, highlighted the municipality's compliance with international auditing standards and effective internal control mechanisms.
