Katerini Urban Planning Office corruption investigation leads to 11 arrests
Greek authorities have dismantled an alleged criminal organization operating within the Katerini Urban Planning Office. Following an operation by the Internal Affairs Service of the Hellenic Police, 11 individuals were arrested, including four public employees—notably the department director and the head of the Construction and Inspection Department—and seven private professionals, such as architects, civil engineers, and surveyors.
The investigation, which began following a complaint in December 2025, uncovered a system where bribes, referred to as “fast-track” payments, were allegedly exchanged to expedite building permits and the legalization of illegal constructions. Bribes reportedly ranged from 150 to 400 euros for routine matters, while settlements for illegal buildings could reach up to 7,000 euros.
Police seized 264,440 euros in cash, securities worth 420,000 euros, 38 English gold sovereigns, gold coins, jewelry, and professional engineering stamps. Authorities have identified 151 instances of alleged illegal activity involving total illicit benefits of approximately 137,932 euros. An additional 64 individuals, including a building inspector and an employee from another public service, have been identified in the case file. The suspects face charges including bribery, gang activity, forgery, and money laundering.
