Katerini Sports Center Renamed for Theodoros Diamantopoulos

The B' Municipal Athletic Center in Katerini now bears the name of the late sports pioneer Theodoros Diamantopoulos, following a unanimous municipal council decision on 31 March 2021. A plaque with his name was installed on 28 July 2026, formally recognizing his decades‑long contributions to athletics in Pieria and the wider region.

Diamantopoulos, who died in November 2020, was a former footballer for Pierian clubs, a track athlete for Archelaos, and a long‑time administrator. He served on the local SEGA committee, chaired the Union of Athletic Associations of Pieria–Imathia, and helped organize major events such as the World Marathon Championships and Balkan competitions. Mayor Ioannis Doumos and Deputy Mayor for Sports Savvas Karypidis highlighted his lasting impact on the community's sporting heritage.
