Istanbul police arrest suspects in real estate fraud and gold theft
Police in Istanbul have conducted major operations targeting two separate criminal activities: a large-scale real estate fraud scheme and a high-value gold theft by a courier.
In the real estate fraud case, 13 suspects were detained following simultaneous raids in Istanbul, Sinop, and Giresun. The group allegedly used fake online advertisements for low-priced apartments, primarily in Esenyurt, to solicit deposits from victims. Investigators determined the suspects operated like a family business, defrauding approximately 30 people of roughly 25 million lira. Authorities have frozen the suspects' bank accounts and seized 23 properties, including houses, lands, and orchards.
In a separate incident in Kağıthane, a jewelry courier identified as Deniz B. was arrested after disappearing with 2 million lira worth of gold and foreign currency. After 27 days on the run, the suspect was located hiding in a building's roof void during a drone-assisted police operation. Deniz B. was subsequently remanded in custody on charges of abuse of trust and theft from a workplace.
