Katharina von Schnurbein appointed Germany's antisemitism commissioner

The German federal cabinet has appointed Katharina von Schnurbein as the new Federal Government Commissioner for Jewish Life in Germany and the Fight against Antisemitism. She succeeds Felix Klein and is scheduled to assume her new role in Berlin on October 28.

Von Schnurbein previously served as the European Commission's commissioner for combating antisemitism and promoting Jewish life for eleven years, a position she held since 2015. During her tenure in Brussels, she was instrumental in ensuring that all 27 EU member states apply the IHRA definition for identifying antisemitism.

Dr. Josef Schuster, President of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, described her as an “outstanding appointment” with extensive international networks. He noted that her leadership comes at a time of increasing challenges, specifically citing the rise of antisemitism following the events of October 7, 2023, and the emergence of antisemitism disguised as anti-Zionism.
