German Economic Minister Katherina Reiche has expressed support for European Commission proposals to reform the EU emissions trading system, aiming to prevent industrial flight and production relocation. Reiche argues that the reform must ensure energy-intensive companies can remain in Germany by providing more flexibility and expanding the allocation of free CO2 certificates.

The Commission’s proposal suggests slowing the reduction of available emission rights and increasing free allocations in certain sectors. Reiche emphasized that the criteria for free allocation must reflect economic reality to avoid overburdening the industry.

However, the proposals have drawn sharp criticism from The Greens. Party spokesperson Andreas Audretsch accused Reiche of undermining future business models and hindering companies that have invested in new technologies. He noted that major industrial players, including Salzgitter AG, Heidelberg Materials, Saarstahl, and SAP, have previously advocated for a strong emissions trading system.
