Kathy Hochul urges Mayor Mamdani to focus on New York governance

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has urged Mayor Zohran Mamdani to prioritize the “blocking and tackling of city government” over international affairs, specifically regarding Israel and the war in Gaza. In an interview with The New York Times, Hochul emphasized that while the two Democrats share priorities such as expanding childcare, improving public transportation, and increasing housing, Mamdani’s focus on foreign policy has become a point of contention.

Mamdani has faced criticism for his anti-Israel positions, including a video in which he discussed his lack of authority to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his decision to boycott the city’s annual Israel Day Parade. Hochul, a moderate Democrat, addressed concerns regarding rising antisemitism, stating she is committed to protecting Jewish New Yorkers.

Additionally, Hochul discussed her fiscal plans, noting she does not intend to create new taxes next year unless the state faces unexpected cuts in federal aid. She also expressed concern regarding potential voter intimidation by federal immigration agents during the upcoming November elections.
