Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre transforms with rare desert bloom

The Australian outback is experiencing a rare transformation as Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre and surrounding desert landscapes burst into vibrant colors. Following a heavy monsoon season with rainfall nearly 50% above the long-term average, the region is blanketed in diverse plant life, including sandhill wattle, saltbush, lignum, grasses, and desert flowers.

Floodwaters from western Queensland have filled three major river systems—the Georgina, the Diamantina, and Cooper Creek—which flow into the lake. This level of environmental transformation in the center of the continent has not been observed since 1974. While the heavy rains caused significant disruption, including livestock losses and submerged tracks, they have created a lush, multicolored landscape of greens, pinks, blues, and purples.
