Katia Itzel García reports identity theft on social media

Mexican professional referee Katia Itzel García has reported the impersonation of her identity on the social media platform X. An apocryphal account, @KatiaItzel_, which carries a “parody” label, has been using García’s name and photograph to post insults directed at journalists and other officials.

The fraudulent account gained attention after posting a message targeting sports journalist David Faitelson, stating, “Asco ver tu cara en @TUDNMEX Sr @DavidFaitelson_ por favor ponte una máscara.” While some social media users recognized the account as a parody, others mistook the posts for genuine comments from García, leading to confusion and online friction.

García, who made history as the first Mexican woman to referee in a World Cup, addressed the situation via Instagram, questioning the cowardice of those stealing identities to attack others without accountability.
