The Odyssey film breaks box office records globally

Christopher Nolan’s film adaptation of Homer’s epic, ‘The Odyssey’, has become a global cinematic phenomenon, surpassing $1.29 billion at the worldwide box office. The production, featuring a cast including Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, and Robert Pattinson, has set significant financial milestones, including becoming the highest-grossing film in the history of the BFI IMAX in London, surpassing James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’.

Technically, the film has revitalized interest in the IMAX 70mm format, generating hundreds of millions in revenue from specialized large-format screenings. The film’s success has also sparked cultural and regional discussions, ranging from debates over its psychological portrayal of Odysseus to renewed interest in the historical origins of Homer in the Mediterranean and tourism potential for the Greek island of Ithaca.

While the film dominates global markets, including a strong debut in China, it has also faced scrutiny regarding its casting and its thematic interpretation of war and trauma. Universal Pictures is expected to extend its theatrical exclusivity before the film moves to streaming services later in 2026.
