Greece: Minister Skertsos reports on education and retiree employment
Greek Minister of State Akis Skertsos has addressed several social and economic developments in Greece. Regarding higher education, Skertsos reported that the non-enrollment rate of successful university candidates saw a slight decrease in 2026, falling to 5.89% from 6.36% in 2025. He noted that while economic pressures like the cost of living and inflation may influence student decisions, the rate remains consistent with the historical average of approximately 6%. He emphasized the government's commitment to supporting students through increased housing allowances.
In education policy, Skertsos highlighted the role of the Onassis Public Schools in promoting social mobility and reducing inequality. Following a visit to the Onassis School in Kolonos, he praised the institution's modern infrastructure and diverse extracurricular activities, noting that 20 such schools now operate across Greece in collaboration with the Onassis Foundation.
Additionally, data from e-EFKA reveals a significant surge in the number of retirees returning to the workforce. Following the implementation of legislation on January 1, 2024, which abolished the 30% pension reduction for working retirees, the number of employed retirees has risen from approximately 36,000 in late 2023 to over 300,000 as of September 2026. Officials suggest this trend utilizes professional expertise and strengthens the social security system.
