Katowice honors citizens and names stadium after Jan Furtok

During a ceremonial session marking the 161st anniversary of Katowice receiving city rights, the Katowice City Council honored several individuals and institutions with the ‘Zasłużony dla Miasta Katowice’ (Meritorious for the City of Katowice) title. The recipients include actress Grażyna Bułka, Bishop Marian Niemiec, and the Zakład Doskonalenia Zawodowego (Vocational Training Center) in Katowice.

Additionally, the council unanimously decided to name the municipal stadium at ul. Nowej Bukowej 1 after Jan Furtok, a legendary figure of the GKS Katowice football club. Furtok, who passed away on November 26, 2024, was a key player in the club’s historic 1986 Polish Cup victory. Mayor Marcin Krupa noted that Furtok symbolized the club’s greatest successes and supported the team during difficult periods. Ceremonies related to the stadium naming are planned for November.
