Katowice Muslim prayer hall expansion sparks local controversy

The Katowice City Hall approved the extension of a building owned by the Muslim Association of Cultural Shaping at 1 Maja 130, adding a prayer and meeting hall designed for 45 people. Residents were not notified in advance and were excluded from public consultations, leading to local concern about placing a religious facility in a densely built residential area.

Politicians from the right‑wing Confederation, including MPs Krzysztof Bosak and Krzysztof Mulawa, used the project to warn of a perceived Islamisation of Poland, describing the hall as an “unofficial mosque” and calling for stricter regulations on foreign funding of Islamic activities. Businessman and Confederation activist Rafał Mekler also criticised the development, likening new mosques to historical border markers.

City spokesperson Sandra Hajduk clarified that the land is privately owned and the municipal role is limited to checking legal compliance, not evaluating the purpose of the construction.
