Katowice railway failure causes massive train delays in Poland

A major failure of railway traffic control equipment at the Katowice station in Poland caused significant disruptions to rail services on Wednesday. The malfunction resulted in the total suspension of traffic between 3:00 and 5:00, leading to widespread delays and cancellations across the region.

PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe reported that the failure caused delays for approximately 222 trains, totaling roughly 6,200 minutes of delay, and led to the cancellation of 62 services. Koleje Śląskie reported that by 14:00, 39 trains had been cancelled and 102 were delayed by over 5,000 minutes.

Jacek Dobrzyński, spokesperson for the minister coordinating special services, stated that while it is difficult to confirm sabotage at this stage, the matter is being treated very seriously. The police are investigating the incident, and the Internal Security Agency (ABW) has been informed to monitor the situation.
