Katowice S86 viaduct replacement project launched

The Generalna Dyrekcja Dróg Krajowych i Autostrad (GDDKiA) has announced a tender for the design of a major infrastructure project on the S86 route in Katowice. The project involves the complete demolition and reconstruction of aging viaducts over Borki Street.

Built in the 1980s, the existing structures have undergone technical inspections that revealed damaged insulation and advanced degradation of the load-bearing construction. Due to the high volume of traffic—approximately 100,000 vehicles daily—authorities determined that temporary repairs are no longer economically viable.

The selected design firm will have 12 months to prepare complete documentation and obtain construction permits. The project aims to ensure long-term safety and prevent emergency closures on this critical link between Katowice and Sosnowiec.
