Katowice skyscraper proposal sparks local opposition

Plans to construct a 130-meter skyscraper at Chorzowska 1 in Katowice have met with significant resistance from local residents and authorities. The proposed development, designed by architect Tomasz Konior for MTX Development, is located near the green Koszutka district, leading to concerns regarding landscape changes and increased traffic congestion.

Katowice Mayor Marcin Krupa has expressed concern that the project does not align with the character of the surrounding area. Developer Tomasz Sobolewski has suggested considering alternative uses for the site, such as short-term rentals, due to its proximity to cultural attractions.

The controversy highlights ongoing issues with urban planning in the region, as the area lacks an updated Local Spatial Development Plan. Currently, developers rely on building condition decisions, a practice that has previously enabled the construction of major sites like the International Congress Centre and the NOSPR concert hall.
