Katsina State community hunters banditry kidnapping plot Nigeria security

Community hunters in Gidan Wawo village, Katsina State, killed 14 suspected bandits during a gun battle on Friday, October 23, 2026. The confrontation occurred after the group, allegedly led by Isiya Kwashen Garwa, attacked a private vehicle traveling from Kakumi Ward to Illela Market in Sokoto State.

The attackers reportedly set the vehicle on fire, resulting in the death of 50-year-old Jamilu Lawal. Three other passengers were rescued from the vehicle. During the engagement, 29-year-old community hunter Mohammed Ibrahim Jidda was killed, and another hunter, Usman Sunday, sustained gunshot injuries.

The Katsina State Government stated that the incident followed intelligence reports regarding the movement of 26 armed bandits on 13 motorcycles toward the Dawan Laila forest. Authorities have implemented countermeasures due to concerns regarding potential reprisal attacks by the surviving bandit members.
