Diphtheria outbreak spreads across multiple Nigerian states

Nigeria is facing a significant diphtheria outbreak, with severe impacts reported in Katsina, Kano, and Plateau states. In Katsina, suspected cases have spread across 29 local government areas, with Funtua recording the highest burden. Health officials attribute the spread to low vaccination rates and porous borders with the Niger Republic. The state government has launched a reactive vaccination campaign, administering over 150,000 doses within five days and securing an additional 650,000 doses. To manage the crisis, Katsina has established multiple new isolation and treatment centres to relieve pressure on existing facilities.

In Kano, authorities have confirmed two diphtheria-related deaths. In response, the Nigerian federal government has activated an emergency multi-agency task force, involving the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) and the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), to strengthen surveillance and immunization efforts.

Plateau State is also experiencing a surge, with at least 23 deaths and 143 suspected cases reported recently. Health officials in Plateau have noted challenges including a shortage of diphtheria antitoxin and difficulties in diagnosing cases due to a lack of specialized sample collection containers.
