Katsina students hospitalized after medication administration

At least 154 students from Government Science Secondary School in Batagarawa, Katsina State, were hospitalized following the administration of praziquantel tablets intended to treat schistosomiasis (bilharzia).

Reports indicate that students experienced symptoms including vomiting, dizziness, and abdominal pain. While some accounts suggested students were unconscious upon arrival at medical facilities, the Katsina police command stated that all affected students have since been treated and discharged. No casualties or loss of life have been recorded.

Allegations have surfaced regarding the school's response, with claims that some teachers physically assaulted students who complained of feeling unwell, accusing them of pretending to be sick. Calls for an independent investigation by the Katsina State Ministries of Education and Health have been made to determine the dosage used and whether proper medical supervision was provided during the administration of the medication.
