Kattya González case taken to United Nations by Codehupy

The Human Rights Coordinator of Paraguay (Codehupy) has filed an action before the United Nations Human Rights Committee regarding the removal of former Senator Kattya González. The legal challenge argues that her loss of investiture in February 2024 was irregular and unconstitutional.

Codehupy asserts that the removal violated fundamental rights, including political rights, due process, and the presumption of innocence. Specifically, the organization claims that only a few hours passed between the presentation of the accusation and the vote, leaving the former senator insufficient time to prepare a defense.

The case follows the rejection of an unconstitutionality action by Paraguay’s Supreme Court of Justice. Advocates state that the international appeal seeks to establish clear standards for protecting political rights and parliamentary due process, aiming to prevent future abuses of power and ensure the protection of democratic participation in Paraguay.
