Eli Lilly approved to build $3 billion drug factory in Katwijk
The Katwijk municipal council has approved a permit for American pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly to construct a $3 billion manufacturing facility near the Valkenburgse Meer. The 20-hectare site, which will stand up to 40 meters high, is intended for the production of diabetes and weight-loss medications. The project is expected to create approximately 500 direct jobs and represents one of the largest foreign investments in the Netherlands in recent years.
During the decision-making process, the council rejected a request for a local referendum, citing legal time constraints. The approval followed a period of intense debate regarding the facility's impact on the local environment, including concerns over water usage, traffic, and energy consumption. Due to limitations in the local power grid, Eli Lilly plans to use gas turbines to generate electricity temporarily.
To support the project, the national and provincial governments have committed to infrastructure investments, including a 72 million euro package to improve regional accessibility. While the council voted 28-4 in favor, several motions were passed to ensure increased oversight, safety preparations, and ongoing consultation with local residents.
