Katy Perry: The evolution of a pop icon

Born Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson to pastors in Santa Barbara, California, Katy Perry transitioned from a gospel-influenced singer to a global pop phenomenon. After an initial Christian music project titled Katy Hudson failed to gain widespread traction, she relocated to Los Angeles and adopted her mother's maiden name for her professional career.

Her commercial breakthrough arrived in 2008 with the single ‘I Kissed a Girl’, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 and propelled the album ‘One of the Boys’ to international success. She reached a career pinnacle with the 2010 album ‘Teenage Dream’, becoming the first female artist to achieve five number-one singles from a single album, matching a record previously held by Michael Jackson.

Beyond her recording career, Perry performed at the Super Bowl XLIX halftime show in 2015 and served as a judge on American Idol. Her recent discography includes the albums ‘Witness’, ‘Smile’, and her latest release, ‘143’, which debuted in September 2024.
