Kauaʻi residents lead recovery after Hurricane Lowell

Hurricane Lowell, the strongest storm to impact Kauaʻi in 34 years, has caused widespread destruction across the Hawaiian islands of Kauaʻi and Niʻihau. The storm brought intense rains, winds, and coastal waves, resulting in power outages for approximately 90% of Kauaʻi’s 36,000 electric utility customers.

Governor Josh Green’s office has reported 10 destroyed homes and 67 others with significant damage. On the North Shore, rural homes faced flooding and prolonged power outages, while the South Shore experienced devastating storm surges that impacted beachfront properties and roads.

In response to the damage, local residents have initiated community-led recovery efforts. Neighbors have been working to clear debris from highways, repair roofs, and distribute food through organizations like the Westside Christian Center. These grassroots actions aim to restore access for utility crews and provide immediate relief while waiting for federal financial and cleanup assistance.
