Kauaʻi urges tourism return to aid recovery after Hurricane Lowell

Following the impact of Hurricane Lowell on September 8, 2026, officials and small business owners on the Hawaiian island of Kauaʻi are calling for the return of tourists to bolster the local economy. While the island initially requested that visitors avoid the area to allow recovery crews space to repair roads, restore power, and clear debris, the lack of footfall is now threatening the stability of the community. Business owners report being forced to reduce staff due to the economic downturn.

Recovery efforts are ongoing across the island. The Kauaʻi Emergency Management Agency and the Kauaʻi Police Department have restored their non-emergency lines. Solid waste collection is resuming in North Shore areas such as Ha‘ena and Wainiha, though some roads remain inaccessible.

To assist residents, emergency food distributions are being held throughout the week in locations including Hanalei, Koloa, Kekaha, ‘Ele‘ele, and Lihu‘e. Additionally, hurricane resource centers in Hanalei and Koloa are providing in-person support for unemployment insurance applications through the Department of Labor and Industrial Relations.
