Kaufland expands drugstore range and self-checkout network
Kaufland is implementing significant changes to its retail model in Germany, focusing on both product assortment and checkout technology. The retailer is expanding its drugstore segment to allow customers to purchase personal care items during their regular grocery trips. As part of this initiative, the private label Bevola is being redesigned with new packaging and a clearer structure. The initial rollout of the updated Bevola line is currently limited to five stores in Berlin and Sinsheim, with further locations to follow.
Simultaneously, Kaufland is aggressively expanding its self-service checkout network. The company aims to have over 8,000 self-service terminals across Germany, with approximately 2,000 already operational in 300 stores. The rollout is expected to continue rapidly, adding roughly four stores per week through 2026. These systems include the K-Scan mobile option and new modules with portrait displays. While the company is prioritizing digital payment flexibility through apps and cards, traditional staffed registers will remain available in all locations.
