Kaunas Castle reconstructed in new sculptural composition

A new sculptural composition titled ‘Kaunas Accent’ has been unveiled in Kaunas, Lithuania, to reconstruct the historical image of the Kaunas Castle built in 1409. Created by sculptor Rimantas Okulič-Kazarinas, the scaled-down model depicts the 15th-century fortress and the three castles built by Grand Duke Vytautas.

The installation is part of a series titled ‘Unseen Historical Objects,’ which aims to bring lost or fragmented city landmarks into public spaces. The model provides a comprehensive view of the structure, the terrain, and surviving fragments that are otherwise difficult to visualize.

Beyond its educational value for tourists and historians, the sculpture serves a tactile function, allowing visually impaired individuals to experience the relief and forms of the former structure through touch. Kaunas Mayor Visvaldas Matijošaitis noted that the project brings archival history into the daily lives of residents and visitors.
