Kaunas implements seasonal urban landscaping strategy

Kaunas implements a comprehensive seasonal landscaping strategy designed to enhance the city's urban architecture and livability. From early spring to late autumn, the city's streets, squares, and parks are decorated with carefully planned flower arrangements intended to provide continuous blooms throughout the warm season.

Spring plantings feature tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths, which are eventually replaced by summer and perennial varieties. To ensure durability in urban conditions, the city selects hardy plants such as sage, asters, echinacea, sedum, and thyme. In shaded areas, species like lungwort, astrantia, and hakonechloa are utilized. Nemuno Island is noted for its diverse botanical collection, combining herbaceous plants with decorative shrubs and accents like jasmine and meadowsweet.

Radeta Savickienė, head of the Environmental Protection Department for Kaunas Municipality, stated that all greenery is part of a unified urban concept aimed at softening the visual impact of architecture without overwhelming it. "A successful flower garden is one that at least briefly stops a passerby and allows them to enjoy the beauty created by the city," Savickienė remarked.

To ensure high survival rates, plants are sourced from a specialized supplier that grows seedlings adapted to Lithuanian climatic conditions. Future plans include expanding green spaces, with the renovation of A. Juozapavičius Square being a priority.
