Kaunas police detain suspect in newspaper billboard arson

Authorities in Kaunas have detained Bernardas Bučas in connection with the arson of the “Kauno diena” newspaper billboard. The incident occurred on October 13 around 11:20 PM on K. Donelaičio Street, where the sign attached to a six-story brick building was doused in gasoline and set on fire.

Prosecutors are requesting a three-month arrest for Bučas, citing the risk of him committing further crimes. The investigation is being conducted under the charge of destroying property in a manner that endangers the public.

Bučas, described as a descendant of prominent artists, has a history of legal issues and aggressive behavior in the region. His past actions include allegedly shooting at firefighters from a balcony, setting fire to a former police station, and harassing individuals and institutions. He was also previously suspected in the death of a homeless person, though no evidence was found to support the charge.
