Kaunas renovates city stairs to improve pedestrian connectivity

The city of Kaunas is undergoing an extensive renovation of its staircases to enhance pedestrian mobility and safety. Over the past five years, the municipality has allocated 5 million euros to this initiative, which extends beyond the city center to various districts.

In 2024, renovations were completed in several locations, including Marvelė, M. K. Čiurlionis, Kaišiadorys, Studentų, Linkuva, Demokratų, Kybartų, Mackevičiaus, Klinikų, and Strazdo streets. Improvements have also been made at the Pakrantė path near the Kaunas reservoirs, as well as at the Sanatorija and Mituva–Savanorių junctions. Specific projects include the renewal of three stair connections on both sides of the Varniai Bridge and the American Lithuanian stairs.

The project focuses on more than just repairing steps; it includes upgrading the surrounding environment with improved lighting, benches, rest areas, bicycle ramps, and new handrails. In complex areas like Vytauto Park, where steep inclines require slope stabilization, much of the work is being performed manually. The goal is to make these connections more functional, accessible, and integrated into the city's public infrastructure.
