Kaunas Southeast Bypass and HE bridge open ahead of schedule

A new section of the Kaunas Southeast Bypass and a bridge over the Kaunas Hydroelectric Power Plant (HE) have opened ahead of schedule. The opening, effective August 24, aims to improve transit efficiency and local connectivity.

For drivers traveling from Vilnius toward Marijampolė, the new route provides a more convenient path that bypasses heavily congested city center streets. Local residents will also benefit from improved access to the Palemonas and Petrašiūnai districts. The completion of this section integrates the previously isolated tunnels near Amaliai into a functional transport link.

With the opening of the new bypass, traffic organization near the Kaunas HE has changed significantly. Drivers heading toward the Pažaislis Monastery can now choose between the new bypass or using the viaduct to continue onto T. Masiulio Street. Notably, the side road at the T. Masiulio Street turn toward the hydroelectric plant has transitioned from two-way to one-way traffic. Authorities advise motorists to pay close attention to new road signs to adapt to these changes.
