KAUST researchers discover corals can develop disease resistance

Researchers at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) have discovered that corals can develop a form of disease resistance through a process known as pathogen priming. The study, published in ISME Host Microbe, demonstrates that corals exposed to sub-lethal doses or inactive forms of a pathogen can more effectively fight off the same threat during future encounters.

This discovery provides the first evidence of an immune memory-like response in corals, suggesting they can be "trained" to strengthen natural defenses. The research also indicates that pathogen priming triggers changes in the coral's microbiome, suggesting that disease resistance may stem from the partnership between the coral and its associated microorganisms.

These findings offer a potential new strategy for coral reef restoration and protection as reefs face increasing pressure from warming seas and disease outbreaks.
