KAUST researchers use NMR to advance battery electrolyte understanding
Researchers at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) have published a review article proposing a new way to analyze liquid battery electrolytes. Rather than treating electrolytes as static chemical recipes, the study suggests viewing them as evolving liquid states.
By utilizing Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), scientists can better understand the connection between microscopic structure, movement, and dynamic heterogeneity. This approach aims to provide a clearer guide for developing more reliable batteries by observing how electrolytes interact with electrodes. These interactions are critical as they influence charge transfer, parasitic chemical processes, and the stability of the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) and cathode-electrolyte interphase (CEI).
