Greece wildfires: 47 fires reported in 24 hours and multiple arson arrests

Greece has experienced a surge in wildfires, with 47 agricultural and forest fires reported within a 24-hour period. While 37 of these were contained at an early stage, 10 remain under active management. Significant incidents occurred in Volos, where three separate fire fronts in the Aivaliotika, Soro, and Alykes areas triggered 112 emergency alerts. In Milos, a fire in the Prophet Elias area affected low vegetation, and a similar blaze was reported in the Prophet Elias area of Salamina.

Authorities have made several arrests related to these incidents. In Trikala, a 46-year-old man was arrested for allegedly starting a fire intentionally using a naked flame, with evidence linking him to two previous fires in the same area. In Karystos, a 47-year-old man was detained for causing a fire through negligence during hot work at a wind farm site, receiving a fine of 6,641.25 euros. In Kavala, an 80-year-old man confessed to intentionally setting fire to dry grass.

Additionally, an Israeli national was released on a 10,000 euro guarantee following allegations of negligence regarding a large fire in Sellia, Rethymno, where a grill was reportedly used during high winds. Since January 1, 2026, the Fire Service has issued 728 administrative fines totaling over 1.1 million euros and made 305 arrests related to fire incidents.
