Kawagoe to host traditional festival and bird-themed event
Kawagoe, Saitama Prefecture, known as ‘Little Edo,’ continues to draw interest for its historical significance and cultural events. The city is characterized by its Kurazukuri streetscape, featuring heavy merchant buildings with black plaster walls built after the Great Kawagoe Fire of 1893. Key landmarks include the Toki no Kane bell tower, Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine, and Kitain Temple.
Local specialties include sweet potatoes and eel. The city is also home to the annual Kawagoe Matsuri, a festival rooted in the rites of Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine. The next festival is scheduled for October 17–18, 2026, featuring traditional floats and musical performances.
Coinciding with the festival, the ‘Bird Fes Kawagoe’ will be held at Westa Kawagoe on October 17 and 18, 2026. Organized by Kotori Cafe, the event will feature 64 creators and companies showcasing bird-related goods and toys. Due to the Kawagoe Matsuri, traffic restrictions will be in place, and visitors are encouraged to use public transportation.
