Kayode Fayemi identifies five key factors for winning Nigerian elections

Former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi has identified five critical factors, which he calls “election gods,” that politicians must satisfy to succeed in Nigerian elections. In the book “How To Win Elections in Nigeria” by Seun Oloketuyi, Fayemi lists the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, the judiciary, non-state security actors, and financial resources as the key forces candidates must navigate.

Fayemi emphasized that winning requires more than voter support or a campaign structure; candidates must understand local political environments and build relationships with party leaders, elected officials, and influential figures. He noted that every state has unique peculiarities and that candidates must be conversant with a state's history and political landscape.

Reflecting on his own political career, Fayemi recounted challenges from his early governorship campaigns in Ekiti, including attempts by opponents to dismiss his credentials. He described the political climate during his entry into politics as having a “violent edge” and becoming “toxic,” noting the necessity of being a bold candidate to confront established administrations.
