Kayseri archaeological excavations uncover 12th-century madrasa

Archaeological excavations are underway in Kayseri, Turkey, as part of the Suriçi Camikebir Urban Transformation Project. During demolition and renovation work, remnants of a 12th-century madrasa (religious school) were discovered near the historic Cami Kebir mosque.

Kayseri Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Memduh Büyükkılıç inspected the site, noting that the structure is believed to be part of a complex built by Melik Mehmet Gazi, the founder of the city. The excavations, conducted under the supervision of the Kayseri Museum Directorate, aim to uncover the historical significance of the site while balancing modern urban development with heritage preservation.

In a separate development in the Terme region, plans are being initiated for a multidisciplinary surface research project to investigate potential archaeological links to the legendary Amazon women. Researchers aim to use scientific data to explore the ecological and geological features of the area, with formal applications to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism expected by late 2026.

Additionally, Melikgazi Municipality has launched a large-scale urban transformation project in the Kazım Karabekir neighborhood, involving the construction of 30 blocks and 1,320 apartments across 130,000 square meters.
