Turkish municipalities face major corruption investigations and detentions

Turkish law enforcement has launched major corruption investigations targeting several municipalities. In Istanbul, an operation led by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office resulted in the detention of 28 individuals, including Eyüpsultan Mayor Mithat Bülent Özmen. The investigation focuses on allegations of bribery, membership in a criminal organization, and bid-rigging in public tenders.

In Mersin, a similar investigation has led to the detention of 59 people, including the mayors of Mersin Metropolitan, Yenişehir, and Mezitli. Authorities have identified significant public losses, including approximately 331 million TL at Mersin Metropolitan Municipality and over 1.1 billion TL in Mezitli. Political figures and opposition parties have criticized the operations, describing them as political maneuvers against elected officials.

Separately, in İzmir, Mayor Cemil Tugay met with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at the Presidential Complex to discuss the city's future projects and infrastructure. The meeting has sparked political speculation regarding Tugay's political affiliation, though he has previously maintained his status as an independent mayor.
