Kazakhstan and Malawi explore wheat trade and diplomatic ties

Kazakhstan and Malawi are exploring new agricultural trade opportunities following the formal establishment of diplomatic relations during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. A primary focus of the discussions is the potential export of Kazakh wheat to Malawi, which would mark Kazakhstan’s first direct entry into the sub-Saharan African wheat market.

Currently, Malawi’s wheat imports are heavily concentrated, with Russia and Australia supplying approximately 95% of the market. For Kazakhstan, expanding into sub-Saharan Africa offers a way to diversify its export destinations beyond North Africa, where its wheat shipments have recently surged.

In exchange, Malawi is looking to develop sales of tea, coffee, and macadamia nuts within the Kazakh market. While discussions are ongoing, commercial deliveries have not yet been established. Future steps will require technical agreements regarding grain certification, volume definitions, logistics, and payment terms.
